Portuguese postmodernist artist, Joao Figueiredo, works in acrylic with a strong black palette for maximum impact. Using half-seen fragments of older paintings, he juggles modernity with tradition and infuses the whole with humour, playing with the whole concept of art and how we appreciate it.
By ‘appropriating’ these traditional portraits of women of yore – and taking something away – he recreates the feel of Duchamp’s surrealism.
